ON CAMPUS

As my career has progressed, I’ve begun getting invitations to give talks and workshops at colleges and universities, sharing what I’ve learned from my twenty years writing plays and working in the theater.  These visits, often (but not always) in connection with productions of my plays, have been delightful experiences both for me and – I’m glad to report – for the students.

During the 2007-08 school year, I visited three schools.  At each I gave a talk on The Art of the Short Play, based on what I’ve learned writing my fifty published short plays, and a question-and-answer session on Theater Realities 101: A Life in the Theater, about how I’ve gotten my plays out into the world and built my career.   

I tailor each visit to the needs and wants of those I’m visiting.  At Western Michigan University, I attended a directing class to give feedback to students directing readings of my short plays and to talk about the director-playwright relationship.  At Central Washington University, I gave a talkback after my play VIETNAM 101: THE WAR ON CAMPUS, and at State Fair College in Missouri, I gave a talkback after my comedy DOMESTIC TRANQUILITY, discussing the creation of these plays and their journey from ideas to finished and produced plays.

In my workshops, I discuss the balance of inspiration and discipline in the process of writing, how I approach developing a play and getting feedback, how extensive some of my revisions have been, and the role serendipity has played in many of my achievements.  For some students I’m the first living playwright they’ve met.  I take this privilege seriously, and I also want to convey how rewarding and fun a life in the theater can be.
